Aṣta-murti

Aṣta-murti literally means ‘The One with eight forms’.

This is one of the names of Śiva, the last deity of the Trinity. The eight forms are mentioned below :

  1. Pṛthvī - Earth
  2. Jala - Water
  3. Agni - Fire
  4. Vāyu - Air
  5. Ākāśa - Space
  6. Yajamāna - The sacrificer
  7. Candra - Moon
  8. Surya - Sun

Sometimes specific names are given to these forms, they are

  1. Pṛthvī - Sarva
  2. Jala - Bhava
  3. Agni - Rudra
  4. Vāyu - Ugra
  5. Ākāśa - Bhīma
  6. Yajamāna - Paśupati
  7. Candra - Mahādeva
  8. Surya - Īśāna
