- a hilly region, which includes a modern town of the same name, belonging to the northern Vindhya Range of mountains, spread over the Chitrakut and Satna distrcicts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh respectively, and of religious, cultural, and archeological importance and mentioned many times in several ancient texts, where Rāma along with his brother and wife is said to have spent about 11 years out of their 14 years of exile (V. Rām.).
