Dhvani literally means ‘sound’. It can be of two varieties:
- Buddhihetuka : caused by the intellect. It can further be of two types:
- svābhāvika (natural). Example: The sound of weeping or laughter.
- kālpanika (produced by imagination). Example: speaking or music.
- Abuddhihetuka : not caused by the intellect. Example: The sound of thunder
The Alaṅkāraśāstra,[1] defines ‘dhvani’ as a suggested meaning. Generally, such usage is found in the poetical works. The works on alaṅkāra list 5,355 varieties of dhvani.
