Geographical Location of Māhiṣmatī[edit]

The city of Māhiṣmatī is now identified with the Oṅkāra-Māndhātā island in the river Narmadā. It is 64 kms. or 40 miles from the modern city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

Historical Significance of Māhiṣmatī[edit]

  • Māhiṣmatī has been mentioned not only in the epics but also in the purāṇas.
  • It was the capital of the powerful king Kārtavīryārjuna who had once humbled the mighty Rāvaṇa[1] himself. Later on, the sage Paraśurāma attacked and killed Kārtavīryārjuna at Māhiṣmatī.
  • It was also the capital of Daśāśva, son of the famous king Ikṣvāku.
  • Sahadeva, the last Pāṇḍava hero, is said to have conquered the king Nila who was reigning at Māhiṣmatī at that time.
