Manvādi-tithi literally means ‘the day on which a manvantara starts’.
There are fourteen manvantaras. Each of these manvantaras is said to begin on a particular day. This is called ‘manvādi-tithi’. The following are the fourteen manvādi-tithis:
- Aśvina-śukla-navamī - 9th day of the bright half of Āśvina
- Kārttika-śukla-dvādaśī - 12th day of the bright half of Kārttika
- Caitra-śukla-tṛtīyā - 3rd day of the bright half of Caitra
- Bhādrapada-śukla-tṛtīyā - 3rd day of the bright half of Bhādrapada
- Amāvāsyā of Phālguna - new-moon day of Phālguna
- Pauṣa-śukla-ekādaśī - 11th day of bright half of Pauṣa or Puṣya
- Āṣādha-śukla-daśamī - 10th day of the bright half of Āsādha
- Māgha-śukla-saptamī - 7th day of the bright fortnight of Māgha
- Śrāvaṇa-kṛṣṇa-aṣṭamī - 8th day of the dark half of Śrāvaṇa
- Purṇimā - full-moon of the months of Āṣāḍha, Kārttika, Phālguṇa, Caitra and Jyeṣṭha
These manvādi-tithis are considered extremely good for the performance of śrāddhas to appease the pitṛs or the manes.
