Saptarsis literally means ‘the seven sages’.
The epics and the purāṇas often mention the Saptarṣis, the seven sages, who are highly praised. Generally two sets of Saptarṣis are named belonging to two different manvantaras.[1]
Saptarṣis of Vaivasvata-manvantara[edit]
The sages of Vaivasvata-manvantara are:
- Atri
- Bharadvāja
- Gautama
- Jamadagni
- Kaśyapa
- Vasiṣṭha
- Viśvāmitra
Saptarṣis of Svāyambhuvamanvantara[edit]
The sages of Svāyambhuvamanvantara are:
- Aṅgirasa
- Atri
- Kratu
- Marīci
- Pulaha
- Pulastya
- Vasiṣṭha
Even now a group of seven bright stars of the constellation of Great Bear is identified with them.
