Upaveda literally means ‘subsidiary Veda’.
The word ‘veda’ means knowledge of a particular science. Certain subsidiary fields of knowledge which also go by the title “Veda" are considered very important for the development of the human society. The are:
- Āyurveda - science of life or health
- Dhanurveda - science of war
- Gāndharva- veda - science of music
- Sastraśāstra - science of weapons
These four are said to be associated respectively with the four well-known Vedas which are:
- Ṛgveda
- Yajurveda
- Sāmaveda
- Atharvaveda
