Talk:Varāruci

From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

By Swami Harshananda

Varāruci is the name of quite a few persons. The Śrautasutras of Gobhila was also known as the Puspasutras. According to some scholars, it had a South Indian recension known as Phulusutras, attributed to Varāruci, either as the author or as the editor. There was one Vararuci among the ‘Navaratnas’[1] well-known scholars, in the court of the king Vikramāditya.

Kātyāyana, the grammarian who composed the vārttika[2] on the sutras of Pāṇini[3] was also known as Varāruci. The earliest grammar of the Prākṛt language, the Prākrtaprakāśa, was the work of a Varāruci. However very little is known about these Varāruci.
