The Sāṅkhya Darśana or Sāñkhya philosophy, one of the six well-known philosophical systems, is based on the Sāñkhyakārikā of īśvarakṛṣṇa[1] However, this systematic treatise and others of a similar nature are said to have been modeled on an earlier work called Sastitantra[2] attributed to Vārṣagaṇya who probably lived sometime during the period A. D. 100-300. Whether he was its author or had only compiled it from various earlier sources, is not known. Practically nothing has been discovered about his life and works.
