From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

By Swami Harshananda

Āgamas are a special class of religious literature devoted to the propagation of the various sects centered round the sect-deities. They are generally classified into three groups:

  1. Śaivāgamas
  2. Śāktāgamas
  3. Vaiṣṇavāgamas

It deals with the three deities Śiva, Śakti[1] and Viṣṇu. The Śāktāgamas are also called Tantras.
