Sometimes transliterated as: Aryavarta, AryAvarta, AAryaavarta
- land of the nobles
- the common ancient name in Sanskrit literature for north-western, northern and central India, approximately spreading from the River Indus in the north-west, Kashmir and Himalayan Range in the north, to the northern side of the Vindhya range in the south, and the western border of Bengal in the east, where the culture of the ārya societies (see ‘ārya’) was predominant and flourishing (M. Sańhitā).
