Thiruppulivanam is a small village located just 3 kms from Uthiramerur on the Kanchipuram Road. Thiruppulivanam houses a very ancient temple for Lord Shiva called Sri Vyaagrapureeswarar Temple. Thiruppulivanam got its name as Saint Vyaagrapaadhar worshipped Lord Shiva here. Saint Vyaagrapaadha possessed the body of a human being and legs of a tiger (Sanskrit: vyaagra - tiger, paadha - feet). As this saint worshipped here, the place came to be known as Thiruppulivanam (Tamil: thiru - God, puli – tiger, vanam – forest).

According to legend, it is said that Saint Vyaagrapaadha had taken a boon from Lord Shiva to give him tiger’s legs. With these legs he could leap faster to fetch flowers for Siva Pooja even before the honey bees could touch them. He wanted to wanted to offer the freshest and most pure flowers (untouched even by the bees) to the Lord. Lord Shiva granted his wish and Vyaagrapaadha worshipped the Lord here. One day, a king called Parantaka was infected with a strange disease and was advised to visit this temple. As Parantaka neared the temple, Vyaagrapaadha, out of possessiveness, went and hugged the idol of Shiva Linga. This embrace resulted in the formation of a tiger nail mark on Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva then appeared and blessed both the king and the Saint.

As you approach the temple, a beautiful Nandhi seated facing the sanctum shows you the way to the temple. Here you can find the main deity Vyaagrapureeswarar idol in the form of a Shiva Linga with an unusual jada mudi (knot of hair) on it. Also the Aavudaiyar (base of Shiva Linga) here is square-shaped unlike the usual circle shape. The Goddess here is Amrutha Kujaambal, who has a separate Shrine inside the temple on its outer Praakaram. There is a very beautiful Pillaiyar (Ganesha), wonderfully carved on the stone wall at the entrance of the Goddess’s Shrine.

The Dhakshinamurthy is very peculiar here and not seen elsewhere. Dhakshinamurthy offers Dharshan as Ardhanareeswarar (half Shiva & Shakthi). One foot of his is on the Lion and hand holding the Thirisoolam (as Shakthi). Another foot on the Muyalaka Asura (as Shiva). He is seated under the Kallala tree. Around him one can see the 4 Sanath Kumaras (Sons of Brahma), worshipping him. Also seen are Saint Vyaagrapaadhar and Pathanjali Rishi (incarnation of Maha Vishnu’s serpant, Aadhi Sesha). Usually, if there are rishis or saints near the God’s idol, they will be seen near the feet of the Lord worshipping Him. But here Vyaagrapaadhar is seen next to the God standing equally.

It is said that, Vyaagrapaadhar asked for a boon from the Lord that, both this village and the deity should be named after him. Also he should be equally given the importance while devotees worship the Lord. Lord granted his wish and the place was called as Vyaagrapuri (Thiruppulivanam, today) and the Lord is Sri Vyaagrapureeswarar. Also an equal treatment is given to him in Sri Dhakshinamurthy’s Shrine. The temple also has a separate shrine for Vyaagrapuri Siddhar here.

Another unique importance of this temple is, just outside the sanctum, you can see a dark underground tunnel, which is closed with couple of stone slabs. Upon request the priest burns a piece of camphor (pic above) and pushes it through the slit between the slabs and one can see the underground tunnel as a passage (pic below). It is said that this underground passage starts here and ends atUthiramerur Sri Sundara Varadhar Temple. This has been built by some king for their safe hiding etc., during the times of war.

The outer walls of the temple are magnificent with Rishabas (bulls) guarding the temple. In the inner praakaram, one can see the pillars in unique shape which are not commonly seen in any other temples. The Sanctum here is in the circular shape at the back (pic above). This type of Vimana belongs to the Chola style of architecture which is seen in some temples around Chennai, Kanchipuram areas. Such shaped vimanas are called Gaja Brishta (means Elephant’s Back) as they resemble the back of the elephant in sitting posture.

The other deities are Lingothbavar, Pillaiyar, Lord Brahma, Vishnu Durgai, Suryan (Sun God) and Navagrahas. It is said that, from dawn till dusk a bit of sunlight falls on the Lord Suryan’s idol through a diamond shaped small slit on the wall facing Him.
One can see very ancient and beautiful works on the pillars with images of Kannappa Nayanar, Maha Kali etc., sculpted on them. Outside the main temple, in front of the entrance, there is an old, big Mandapam, which is believed to be Indra Mandapam, in which Lord Indra lands here to worship Shiva. It’s in a poor shape with no maintenance, but looks wonderful. Visit this temple once and you will crave for more visits ! !

Thirukkarugaavoor is located about 20 kms from Kumbakonam. This is a unique temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvathi who bless the world as Sri Mullaivana Naathar & Sri Garbharakshaambigai. Legend has it that thousands of years back this place was called Mullaivanam (a forest filled with Jasmine creepers). It is said that a saint named Nidhruva Rishi along with his wife Vedhika lived in Mullaivanam. They had become very depressed due to remaining childless for several years. They followed the advice of Gautama & Karthikeya Rishis and started worshiping Lord Shiva and Parvathi at the temple here.

After sincere prayers to Lord Shiva and Parvati, the couple were overjoyed to find that Vedhika had became pregnant. When Vedhika was in the final trimester of pregnancy, Nidhruva Rishi had to leave home to visit Sri Varuna. One day Vedhika was lying down and taking respite from tiring household chores and pregnancy pains. When she was half asleep, a Rishi called Urdhvapaadha came to the door asking for Bhiksha. Vedhika didn’t notice the Rishi and hence didn’t respond to him with her hospitality. Saint Urdhvapaadha, without knowing the pregnancy of Vedhika, thought that she was ignoring him and cursed her to be afflicted with a serious disease.

The curse started affecting not only Vedhika’s health but also that of the unborn baby present in her womb. The fetus got deformed and Vedhika realized that this was all due to the curse of Saint Urdhvapaadha. She prayed to Goddess Parvathi Devi at the temple for relief. The Goddess, with her fullest mercy, collected the deformed embryo in a divine pot and made it evolve into a healthy baby. Vedhika was blessed with a beautiful baby boy who was named Naidhruva. As there was no mother’s feed for the baby, the Goddess sent Kamadhenu to arrange milk for the baby. Kamadhenu appeared and scratched her legs on the ground and a milk pond was formed there on the earth just for the baby.

The pond that was formed is known as ‘Khseera Kundam’ (Milk Pot) and is the temple tank that stands today in front of this temple. Vedhika’s husband Nidhruva came back and was thrilled to hear the whole story and the mercy of the Goddess. The couple prayed to the Goddess to take abode in the same village and bless every couple who prays to her with a healthy child and a safe pregnancy. The Goddess agreed with them and settled down in Mullaivanam and goes by the name of Sri Garbharakshaambigai - the savior of fetus. From then onwards, the village also got the name Thirukkarugaavoor (Thiru – God, Karu – Fetus, Kaa – saves).

Even today childless couples and pregnant women come here to seek the blessings of Sri Garbharakshaambigai. According to the native villagers here, none of the women at Thirukkarugaavoor had ever had a miscarriage or any fatality during delivery. In this temple Ghee is offered as Prasadam for the childless couple which they have to take everyday for about 48 days. Also a Sloka (see below) is given at the temple for the expectant mother to chant everyday until delivery.

Castor oil is offered as Prasadam here to the pregnant women which needs to be applied on their abdomen during pregnancy to ensure a safe labor. Everyday one can witness many couples happily coming back to the temple with their new born to thank the Goddess. Also the baby is placed at Her Lotus Feet to seek her blessings. Lord Shiva here is in the form of a Lingam. It is said that the idol here is made of ant hill mud (Putru MaN) and is a Swayambu Murthy (which evolved on its own). Hence there are no Abhishekams here for the Lord. Instead a rare fragrant herb called Punugu is applied on the Lingam (Punugu Chattam).

It is believed that by offering Punugu Chattam to Mullaivana Nathar, one gets relieved of any kind of skin disease. One can still see the impression of the Jasmine creeper on the Shiva Lingam here, as this place was once upon a time full of Jasmine creepers which covered the Lingam. Another rare feature is the moon rays falls directly on the Lingam here during the Full moon day of Thamizh month, Panguni.

The Goddess agreed with them and settled down in Mullaivanam in the name of Sri Garbharakshaambigai (meaning the savior of fetus). From then onwards, the village also got the name Thirukkarugaavoor (Thiru – God, Karu – Fetus, Kaa – saves).

Even today Sri Garbharakshaambigai blesses the childless couples with the child and also the pregnant women for safe delivery of baby. According to the native villagers, to their knowledge, none of the women at Thirukkarugaavoor has ever had a miscarriage or any fatality during delivery. In this temple Ghee is offered as Prasadham for the childless couple which they have to take everyday for about 48 days. Also a Sloka (given below) is given at the temple to be chanted by the expectant mother to pray Sri Garbharakshaambigai, everyday till delivery.

“Hey Sankara samarahaa Bramadhaadhinaadhari

Castor oil is offered as Prasadham here, to the pregnant women to be applied on their abdomen during pregnancy for a safe labor. Everyday, one can witness many couples happily coming back to the temple with their new born to thank the Goddess and seek her blessings by keeping the baby at her Lotus Feet. Lord Shiva here, is in the form of Lingam.

It is believed that by offering Punugu Chattam to Mullaivana Nathar, one gets relieved of any kind of skin diseases. One can see the impression of the Jasmine creeper on the Shiva Lingam here, as this place was full of Jasmine creepers which were covering this Lingam. Another rare feature is the moon rays falls directly on the Lingam here during the Full moon day of Thamizh month, Panguni.

Tiruchirappalli, was earlier known as Thirisirapuram, as a Rakshasa called Thirisiran worshipped Lord Shiva here. There are also stories that since there are three peaks on Rock Fort, occupied by three Gods Shiva, Parvathi & Vinayakar (Uchi Pillaiyar), the place was called Thiri-sikarapuram and later called Tirisirapuram. This place was also known as Sirappalli, Rishabachalam & Dhakshina Kailasam during ancient days. The Rock Fort hill is beleived to be formed lakhs of years back (Archeology and Scientific Sources).

As per mythology, once there was a great tussle between Aadiseshan and the wind God Vaayu to determine who was more powerful. Aadiseshan encircled the Maha Meru hill (Himalaya) and challenged Vaayu whether he can take Himalayas off his clutches. Vaayu made great efforts but finally accepted his defeat. It is said that during the fight, 3 pieces of the mountain broke and flew off to different places. Out of the 3 peices which flew off, one is the Rock fort at Trichy. The other two are at Triconamalee (Ceylon) and Sri Kalahasthi (AP).

'''Uchi Pillaiyar Temple'''

Uchi Pillaiyar (also known as "Uchi Vinayakar") Temple is located on the peak of the Rock Fort hill. The shrine is at a height of 273 ft and one has to climb over 400 steps to reach the pinnacle. Sri Thayumanavar temple is located half way along the path to the peak. Though the climb is a bit steep, the soothing cool breeze helps one reach the peak with too much strain. A panoramic view of the entire town of Trichy and the Srirangam Temple from the Uchi Vinayakar temple is absolutely breathtaking.

'''The Story'''

Rama having defeated Ravana, went back to Ayodhya with Sita, where he had is Pattabhishekam (coronation) as a king. Vibhishana (brother of Ravana) accompanied him on his way back to Ayodhya. After the celebrations, when Vibhishana wanted to return back to Lanka to take charge, Rama presented him with a Ranga Vimana to which he had been personally performing poojas until then. Rama on presenting the idol and Vimana, told Vibhishana to take it to Lanka and install it there with a condition that, on the way back, the idol must not be placed on the ground anywhere for whatsoever reason. Vibhishana agreed to this condition and having thanked Rama, proceeded towards Lanka.

While passing by the city of Thiruchi, Vibhishana was extremely fascinated by the beauty of the flow of the river Cauvery. He felt that it was the right place for him to have his bath and some rest before proceeding to Lanka. He looked around for some help to safeguard the Ranga Vimana until he finishes his bath. There was a small boy playing around in the banks of the Cauvery. Vibhishana handed over the Ranga Vimana to him and told him strictly not to place it on the ground till he comes back. The boy agreed and told him that he will call Vibhishana thrice and if he doesn't come back, he will keep it on the ground and go away.

Vibhishana went into the waters and was enjoying his bath in the river. The boy called him thrice but Vibhishana did not respond as he was in the water. The boy kept the idol on the ground and it started growing enormously. Vibhishana came back in a hurry. Seeing the Vimana on the ground, he tried to lift it but all his attempts failed. He got furious with the boy and went chasing after him. The boy ran to the hilltop and sat on the peak as he couldn't run further. Vibhishana knocked the boy on his head with anger. The boy revealed himself as Lord Vinayaka to Vibhishana. Vibhishana prayed to the lord and went back to Lanka leaving behind the Ranga on the banks of Cauvery.

It was Vinayaka's trick to retain Lord Ranga in Trichy, which is today's famous Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy
Temple. And Lord Vinayaka who played tricks with Vibhishana, is worshipped as Uchi Pillaiyar at the hilltop. Even today one can see a wound on his head caused by the knock of Vibhishana. There is also a rock-cut cave near the temple. The path inside the cave leads to Woraiyur, which was one of the popular cities during ancient times. The temple and its surroundings is a wonderful getaway from the grinds of materialistic life.
