Aśvini literally means ‘equestrian’.

It is the first of the twenty seven nakṣatras or constellations of stars listed by the astronomy. It is said to be associated with the ‘Aśvins,’ the twin Vedic deities, the physicians of the gods in heaven. It is identified with the stars beta and gamma Arietis. In astrology its influence is considered beneficent.
