Colonial Discourse and the Suffering of Indian American Children Book Cover.webp

In this book, we analyze the psycho-social consequences faced by Indian American children after exposure to the school textbook discourse on Hinduism and ancient India. We demonstrate that there is an intimate connection—an almost exact correspondence—between James Mill’s colonial-racist discourse (Mill was the head of the British East India Company) and the current school textbook discourse. This racist discourse, camouflaged under the cover of political correctness, produces the same psychological impacts on Indian American children that racism typically causes: shame, inferiority, embarrassment, identity confusion, assimilation, and a phenomenon akin to racelessness, where children dissociate from the traditions and culture of their ancestors.

My entire family are your priests, oh mother,

Your darlings are eagely waiting for you mother,
Oh Mother today for once, it would become a great help,
The lamp in my house is burning during your evening and morn,
Please come to my house oh mother, Please come to my house oh mother,
Please listen to my words oh mother, I would sacrifice myself to you,
Please come to my home, Please come to my home.

Hatho mein teri mehandi pyar se rachayenge
Foolo se tera darbaar maa sajayenge
Chandan ki chauki pe tujhe ham bithayenge
Saari saari rat maiya bhete sunayenge
Sanso ki ektara maiya tere naam ki mala fere
Aaja maa ghar mere aaja maa ghar mere
Maan le mera kahana maiya wari jau tere

With love we will decorate our hands with your mehandhi,
With flowers I will decorate your sanctum, Oh mother,
I would make you sit in the temple made of sandalwood,
And the entire night mother, I would sit and make you listen,
With the lyre of my breath, I would rotate the rosary of your names,
Please come to my house oh mother, Please come to my house oh mother,
Please listen to my words oh mother, I would sacrifice myself to you,
Please come to my home, Please come to my home.
