By Swami Harshananda
Dvaipāyana literally means ‘one who was born in a dvīpa or island’.
The sage Vyāsa, who collected and edited the Vedic hymns, was known as Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana. He was dark in color (Kṛṣṇa = dark) and was born on a dvīpa or island.
