Colonial Discourse and the Suffering of Indian American Children Book Cover.webp

In this book, we analyze the psycho-social consequences faced by Indian American children after exposure to the school textbook discourse on Hinduism and ancient India. We demonstrate that there is an intimate connection—an almost exact correspondence—between James Mill’s colonial-racist discourse (Mill was the head of the British East India Company) and the current school textbook discourse. This racist discourse, camouflaged under the cover of political correctness, produces the same psychological impacts on Indian American children that racism typically causes: shame, inferiority, embarrassment, identity confusion, assimilation, and a phenomenon akin to racelessness, where children dissociate from the traditions and culture of their ancestors.

Ithni Sakthi Hume Dena Datta, Man kaa viswas kamjor ho naa
Hum chale nek Rasthe pe, Hum se bhoolkar be koi bhool ho na

You give me that much power, Datha, So that the strength of mind is not weakened
I will go the honest path, Let even forgetting let me not commit a mistake

Dur Agyan ke ho andhere, thu hume gyan ki roshni dhe
Har burai se bachthe rahe hum jithni bhi bhale Jindagi dhe

Let the darkness of ignorance go far away, You please give us light of wisdom
Let me keep escaping from every bad thing, Please grant me a life of strength

Ber ho na kisi ka kisi se bhawana man mein Badale ki ho na

Let I not develop enmity towards any and develop my mind in to a change
