Sāmānya literally means ‘that which is the same,’ ‘generality’.
This is one of the seven padārthas or categories recognized by the Vaiśeṣika-darśana. In the Alaṅkāraśāstra, sāmānya refers to such an element which exists both in the basic object and the object with which it is compared, without any distinction.
- Alaṅkāraśāstra means the science of figure of speech.
