This is the lower form of Bhakti itself having the following two stages.

  • Vaidhī Bhakti: At this stage, the devotee engages in specific disciplines aimed at cultivating and deepening the sentiment of devotion toward the Divine. These practices include listening to recitations of sacred scriptures (śravaṇa), and singing devotional hymns (bhajans), among others. There are no formal prerequisites for this stage; however, it necessitates a conscious commitment to following these disciplines with sincerity, dedication, and faith (Śraddhā).
  • Rāgānugā Bhakti: At this stage, the Bhakta cultivates a deep emotional bond (Bhāva) with Bhagavān, often reflecting transcendent relationships akin to those experienced in the worldly realm. These relationships conceptualize Bhagavān as a parent, friend, child, or companion, among others. The disciplines initiated in the earlier stage are no longer practiced out of mere obligation or mechanical routine. Instead, the Bhakta develops an authentic and affectionate connection with the Divine, envisioning Bhagavān in roles such as a master, child, or parent. Just as individuals naturally engage in acts of service for their loved ones in worldly relationships, the Bhakta offers devoted service to Bhagavān with unwavering faith and love.
