How to Post a New Article

1. Make sure you are logged in to Hindupedia
2. Pick an article name: For example: "Varna"
3. Next go to http://www.hindupedia.com/en/Varna
   • The key is to append the title of the article name to the url: http://www.hindupedia.com/en/
   • If the article already exists, you will see it. If it does not, than the page will be blank.
4. Click "Discussion" on the menu bar at the top to go to the "talk" page
   • You will notice the URL is: http://www.hindupedia.com/eng/index.php?title=Talk:Varna&action=edit&redlink=1
5. Input your article and save your changes. Feel free to revise and re-edit the article at this location. Once it is complete, email the group (hindupedia@googlegroups.com) and ask for a review & the editorial team to review & edit the article
6. Once everyone is finished, copy the contents of the article from the "Talk" page to the "Main Page" which is located at http://www.hindupedia.com/en/Varna
7. Delete the contents on the "Talk" page.

In the URLs mentioned above, replace Varna with your article title

How to Post an Article to an Existing Category

1. Login to Hindupedia -- the login link is at the bottom right.
2. Open the category Page
3. Enter name of article in the input box at the top right of the page to add a page to the category and click submit
4. Enter article and click on preview to see how it will appear. Click submit to publish.

How to Post a new Quote for the "Sagely Quotes" section

1. Login to Hindupedia -- the login link is at the bottom right.
2. Open the Sagely Quotes category page: http://www.hindupedia.com/en/Category:Sagely_Quotes
3. Enter name of the quote's topic in the input box at the top right of the page. Make sure to prepend the topic name with 'Quotes:'. If that topic already exists, add a number. For example, if I have a quote with the topic being Growth and this is the second quote on the topic. The name to enter would be: Quotes:Growth2
4. In the article body, replace "Add Your Content Here" with the quote which must be entered in the following format: {{Cquote|Quote|4=Author}}. Replace 'Quote' with the quote and 'Author' with the person who is being quoted.
5. Make sure that the quote is before the category tag otherwise, it will not render properly on the main page.

How to Add an Image to an Article

Images are easy to add in Hindupedia. However, they must be added indirectly--they are treated similarly to "other articles" in a sense.

To add an image, you must create a link to that image in the article. A link looks like

[[image:ImageName-image.jpg|thumb]] where the bolded part is the name of the image.

Once you have saved the article, you will see a link to that image in the article that will be red if the image doesn't exist. If the image has already been uploaded earlier to Hindupedia, your image will be shown directly.

If it is red (as in this case), click on the link and you will be taken to the 'Upload file' page where you can upload the image and add some descriptive text about the image.

Once the image has been reloaded, refresh the original page you wanted to add the image to and the image should appear.

Devanagari Characters & IAST

To transliterate text from English into devanagari or IAST, use iTranslater 2003 from Omkarananda Ashram. It takes input in the ITRANS format and can output in both Devanagari and IAST. This can then be copied and pasted into articles on Hindupedia.

Language Guidelines

Articles on Hindupedia should be written in third-person formal English (spoken english is typically first person, informal). Specific terms should be avoided if they have derogotary meanings and do not directly imply what is being pointed to ie

• idols should not be used. Murthy should be used instead

Because we are writing from a Hindu / traditional perspective, you should avoid the use of the word 'Hindu' whenever possible.

Content guidelines - superiority of a perspective

Articles should not be reflective of the views of any particular school but limit themselves to explaining the concept and its context - without adding any "value" or showing things in positive/negative light. For example, showing Jnana to be superior to Karma marga. As far as we are concerned, they are two approaches with their methods, philosophies, practices. That being said, each approach considers itself the superior and an article focused on that approach should reflect that. ie. an article on Jnana marga, it might be appropriate. In an article on Yajna, it is explained the other way round, from the perspective of yajna and the schools that specialize in yajna (like karma yoga).

Passive vs Active voice

Style guidelines

Categories

They should group every article. More than 1 category for an article is okay.

Dates

CE and BCE, and in numerals unless being quoted. No BC and AD.

Internal linking

Link to articles wherever you can link only once within the article, and place a link in "See also" section if necessary. Do not link within one phrase. For example, do not link the "Veda" portion of "Atharva Veda". Do not link titles, but instead have a :See also: article
if necessary.

Misrendering

Anytime code doesn't render properly (i.e., Template:Cite book), either fix it or report it to me.

Numbers

Only in numerals unless being quoted.

Quotes

Either in <blockquote> text </blockquote> format, or

{{Cquote| text |} format, or "italicized" format.

Sectarian distinction

Hindu sects including Bauddh Dharm, Bonpa Dharm, Jain Dharm, and Sikh Dharm are not to be compared separately to "Hinduism" but only to "mainstream Hinduism" wherever distinguishing is required. Also don't distinguish sectarian adherents from other Hindus but "mainstream Hindus" if required.

Spelling

It's Sanātan not Sanatana, 'Brāhmana' not 'Brahmin', 'Brahmā' (the demigod) not 'Brahma', 'Bhārat' not 'Bharata', 'Parsurama' not 'Parashurama', 'i.e.,' not 'e.g,' and the Veda-names are two words (i.e., 'Rig Veda') not one (i.e., 'Rigveda'.)
