Jinas

From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

By Swami Harshananda

Jinas literally means ‘those who have conquered themselves’.

The twenty-four Tīrthaṅkaras are the founders of Jainism. They are called ‘Jinas’, since they had conquered their own minds. Ṛṣabhadeva was the first among them and Mahāvira was the last tīrthaṅkaras.
