Uparati
By Swami Harshananda
Uparati literally means ‘cessation’.</ref>
Advaita Vedānta prescribes a four-fold spiritual discipline called as sādhana-catuṣṭaya as a preliminary step. Śamādi-satka forms the third step of this discipline. It comprises a group of six exercises as follows:
- Śama - tranquility
- Dama - control of external sense-organs
- Uparati - cessation
- Titikṣā - forbearance
- Śraddhā - faith
- Samādhāna - concentration
Uparati is the cessation of the sense-organs after they are restrained from the pursuits of sense-objects.
